Canadian folk music singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle died recently at the age of 63 from a rare cancer known as clear cell sarcoma. She was best known as part of a folk duo with her sister Anna McGarrigle as well as the mother of Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright from her marriage to American singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III
Her sister Anna broke the news on the duo’s website, announcing: “Sadly our sweet Kate had to leave us last night. She departed in a haze of song and love surrounded by family and good friends. She is irreplaceable and we are broken-hearted. Til we meet again dear sister.”
