Before Nirvana, PJ Harvey and The Smashing Pumpkins there was Pixies. The band probably one of the most influential rock bands of the late 80’s and their debut album Surfer Rosa is the best example of the bands impact. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain cited Surfer Rosa as the basis for Nevermind’s songwriting and The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan described it as “the one that made me go, ‘holy shit’. It was so fresh. It rocked without being lame.” With songs like Cactus, Gigantic and Where Is My Mind? It’s not hard to see what the band is all about, with their hard hitting lyrics, unique drums and Lo Fi sounds the band paved the way for Indie Rock and Grunge going into the 90’s. Although the band and the album did not have much of a commercial success the Critical acclaim and the influences of this album makes this a Classic album in every right.
